To contest the competitive 320 mm bore propulsion and auxiliary power arenas MAN B&W designed the 32/40 series in the medium speed engine programme. It came with five, six, seven, eight and nine in-line and V12, 14, 16 and 18 cylinder models. 

The 320 mm bore and 400 mm stroke design delivers 440 kW per cylinder. Proven elements in larger bore types were downscaled for the 32/40 engine: a stiff one-piece frame with tie-rods and available injection timing for optimum adaptation of the engine to various fuel grades.

The 32/40 design is based on a very stiff cast monobloc single-part frame which is suitable for direct resilient mounting or semi-resilient mounting of the engine

Overhaul MAN B&W 32/40 engine

The engine is known for it's easy of inspection and overhaul. The four-bolt cylinder cover wit hquick-acting seals and clamped and plug-in pipe connections. Only two different types of hydraulic tool are required to handle all the main screwed connections on the engine. The marine-type cracnkpin bearings allow the connecting rod to be withdrawn up the bore for piston and ring inspection without distubring the bearings.

The exhaust gas line features quick-release couplings that permit swift disconnection from the cylinder head.

Upon standard usage there is recommended a 550 man-hour annual maintenance workload for an eight-cylinder L32/40 engine running for 6.000 hours on heavy fuel. The standard regular labor is: Replacement from the fuel nozzles every 3.000 hours; overhauling the exhaust valves (removing the complete cylinder cover) every 6.000 hours; overhauling the piston (including the replacement of piston rings and honing the cylinder liner) every 12.000 hours.
